Class of 2026 Visual Storytelling & Animation

This project was initially much simpler and just me designing three superheroes part of a team. Throughout the design process, I felt unfulfilled. It was as if there was no challenge for me as an artist. I was designing characters just because I could. I will never speak ill of concept artists seeing as how detrimental they are to art and design, but this was my sign that it was not for me.

After months of trying to figure out what was wrong, I slowly realized that the project was. It could be so much bigger and so much better. By the time I realized I was ready to make this a full blown mini-comic it was April 1st. I had just over one month to get this to be fully realized.

I had spent the first week of April researching and reading all that I could to understand the process of making comics. Paired with my already abundant comic collection, I knew it was time for phase two- making the comic.

As handy as the research was, nothing prepares you more than physical experience. The cover was challenging. Placement of characters, background colors and shapes, the title. Page 1 of the comic was even more daunting. IU went in with an understanding of how I wanted to get this done, and it quickly went right out the window. This whole process was an experimental experience. A chance to learn and improve, and I definitely feel like I did. The way I utilize color and draw my lines had measurably improved. Trust me, I know I’ve still got ways to go, but I am proud of the journey. You may wonder why I didn’t go back and redo some of the art to match, and it’s a valid question. The main reason was time.
