Where this Started
In the summer of 2024, I took part in TCNJ’s Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience (MUSE), an eight-week residency where students conduct research or engage in creative projects under the guidance of TCNJ faculty. Alongside my MUSE partner, Sammie Zhu, and under the mentorship of Professor Sorraya Brashear-Evans, we developed visual educational materials for Colgate-Palmolive.
Our project aimed to improve dental hygiene education by visualizing the microscopic world inside the human mouth. We used advanced imaging techniques to show how dental hygiene affects microbial activity. These visuals would be implemented in an explainer video that teaches viewers effective dental hygiene techniques and the science behind them.
SCRIPT MAKING
A script is needed as it provides a base for the voiceover and imagery. It’s especially important as we reworked it several times to simplify technical information to make it accessible to non-scientific audiences.
The DNA script was created in collaboration with our contacts at Colgate-Palmolive, Lyndsay Schaeffer and Fatima Saravia.
ASSET CREATION
A series of vector illustrations, drawn in Adobe Illustrator, that allow an easier way of animating assets and keeping them high quality.
Process & Execution
STORYBOARD
A sequence of illustrations that pre-visualize the animation. Crucial for planning how the animation would look from the script.
PROGRESS
Process of animating the assets in After Effects.
ANIMATIC
Using the storyboards, the animatic establishes the animation timing and creates a more dynamic version of the storyboard.
ANIMATION
The project put together. Assets were brought into Adobe After Effects and animated using the animatic to help with timing.
