Overview

Wait is a short film/documentary tracking the lifestyle and emotions experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of the main issues I struggled with during the development of my project was a lack of resources. I own an older DSLR camera and a tripod with little else to work with. These constraints were both a blessing and a curse. It was difficult to get a shot to look good or right because the age of the camera showed in every shot. Finding ways to get shots that conveyed the right tone and quality became a major consideration when working. This became an advantage because every decision related to every shot in the project became very intentional. With that said, there were many shots that had to be fixed in post-production. This provided an interesting challenge because I needed to rely on my editing savvy to increase the quality of each shot.

Another major challenge was the process of writing, directing, shooting, editing, and narrating. I have always wanted to take on an entirely top to bottom production of my own video. This gave me authority over every single decision I made within the production. However, in the process of all those decisions I realized the thought each one of those choices required was immense. Each part of the piece affected another and creating a coherent project with all of those moving parts was incredibly difficult. Overall, it made me understand that while details were incredibly important, the wide strokes of a piece are the things that give those details structure to rest upon.

This piece marks a first holistic step into my creative and, hopefully, professional goals. I love the process of creating both as a video producer and as a product designer. This project brought me through a real process of creating, refining, and completing a product in the form of a video. The process has given me a deeper and more comprehensive experience of what it will look like to be a creator of products and content.

My hope for my project is that it would provide comfort to everyone who is in quarantine right now. I think my video definitely brings up some difficult emotions or experiences but I want people inside and outside of TCNJ to give some reflection to their time in quarantine and what life looks like beyond this time. I also want the video to function as a time capsule so that when this time in our lives has passed, the project will be here as a snapshot of a very different time.

Adapting to COVID situation

Unfortunately, my original thesis project had to be scrapped because many of the resources I used to create that project were no longer available because of the school closure. This left me with the remainder of the semester to sort out an entirely new thesis project. Frankly, this was a monumental task but I decided to fully embrace my circumstances. I was inspired by the emptiness that filled the streets during quarantine. This inspiration allowed me to begin writing a script for my new project. In a way, the COVID situation became my new project and this became a creative outlet for my own thoughts and feelings as well as my accumulated skill set.
