I'm an animator and vfx artist specializing in 3D formats and level design.
An animation reel centered around the theme of people’s unique perspectives and the way in which this influences how they see the world. Each piece in the reel is an animated version of the description given to me by my interviewees of an illustration shown to them. Similarly, to how a Rorschach test unveils the unique biases of people who take the test, my project aims to unveil the unique variations on the ways in which people view objects and events in their world.
Process and Tools
Over the course of the past few months I have been working towards creating this project to the best of my abilities. I have interviewed dozens of people and spent countless hours trying to create captivating animations. Using 3D rendering software like Autodesk Maya and 3DS Max as well as video compositing software like Adobe After Effects I have been able to create a series of both 2D and 3D visual pieces. Over the course of the project I have found that my greatest challenge was trying to find manageable ways of replicating what I was being described by my interviewees. Many of them had elaborate and ornate ideas about what they interpreted the image I showed them to be, and trying to do these ideas justice while also giving myself a manageable workload proved at first difficult, but the more people that I interviewed the more concrete my concepts for translating their ideas became. Having multitudes of people share their input helped broaden my own perspective on how to best go about doing this project.
I have always been a huge fan of animation and the attention to detail that can be found in high quality animation work. The various entertainment media that I consume be it movies, tv shows, or video games was a huge inspiration for my project. There isn’t any one type of animation and various animators all have unique styles as artists, and this idea of uniqueness was crucial to me creating the idea for this project. The idea for this project also stemmed from my desire to test and expand my knowledge and capabilities in the field of VFX and animation. I have been comfortable with 3D animation for quite some time, but I have been using this project as a way of introducing myself to new concepts and challenging myself professionally.
Given the situation surrounding the spread of COVID-19 I have had to greatly alter the focus of my project. Originally there was going to be a narrative element to the project that tied all the sequences together. This sequence was going to be a series of live action sequences to contextualize the animations, however, given are circumstances I had to forego the live action filming. Despite this alteration I have done my best to present the animations in a compelling fashion and ensure their quality.
